About the Event
Antonin Dvorak - String Quartet in F « American »
Margi MacDuffie will be joining the Nobilis Quartet, a group of musicians from the Nice Philharmonic and faculty of the Conservatory: Marc Sikora and Margaret MacDuffie - violins, Hélène Coloigner - viola, Axel Pojaghi - cello
Antonin Dvořák composed this quartet in 1893 during a summer vacation from his position as director (1892–1895) of the National Conservatory in New York City. He spent his vacation in the town of Spillville, Iowa, which was home to a Czech immigrant community. It took him only 15 days to complete the 4-movement work and he was relieved and happy with it. He incorporated indigenous and African American folk music elements and did the same for his "New World Symphony", also composed there. This fruitful and happy period produced two of his most beloved compositions.
